    Backups Are a Worship Value

    Nobody puts “redundancy” on the vision board. It doesn’t demo well. But if the mission is a distraction-free room where people can actually engage, then the backup plan isn’t a technical detail — it’s part of the ministry.

    The theology of a spare cable: everything on a stage will eventually fail. Cables, batteries, computers, the one adapter that holds the whole system together. Planning for that isn’t faithlessness in the gear; it’s honesty about it. Grace for machines looks like a plan B.

    The practical liturgy: a spare vocal mic staged and muted. Fresh batteries at set positions, not “probably in the drawer.” The click and tracks able to run from a second source. A printed input list, because the day the tablet dies is the day you learn who memorized the patch. If the rig is digital — and ours is — know exactly what happens when a computer hiccups mid-bridge, before it does.

    The test: could a volunteer recover the service without you? If the answer is no, the backup plan is you, and you are not redundant. Document it, walk it through on a Tuesday, and let the system be calmer than any one person’s memory.

    Excellence isn’t when nothing fails. It’s when something fails and almost nobody finds out.

    Every year, somewhere, a tech team decides the sound would finally be good if the console were newer. Sometimes that’s even true. Most of the time the new console arrives, gets set up with the same gain habits, and sounds suspiciously like the old console with more menus.

    The uncomfortable audit: preamps flirting with clip because “the meters look healthy,” faders parked at -30 doing microsurgery, compressors slamming because input level was never right, and a master bus making up the difference. No console survives that. Not the vintage one, not the flagship, not the one in the brochure.

    The free afternoon that beats the five-figure purchase: line check every input, set preamp gain for healthy average level with real headroom, get faders living near unity where they have resolution, and only then judge what the system actually sounds like. Do this once, properly, and the “we need an upgrade” conversation usually changes subject.

    To be fair to new consoles: sometimes you genuinely need more channels, better routing, or recallable scenes for volunteers — legitimate reasons, and scenes are how good gain structure survives between Sundays. Buy for those. Don’t buy to outrun physics.

    Gain structure is the cheapest upgrade in audio. It costs one afternoon and all of your ego.

    192kHz Won’t Save Your Mix: Sample Rates, Explained Calmly

    Sample-rate debates bring out a special kind of confidence in people. So let’s stay calm and stick to what’s established: the sampling theorem says you need a rate just over twice the highest frequency you want to capture. Human hearing tops out around 20 kHz on a great day. That’s why 44.1 and 48 kHz exist — they cover the audible band with room to spare.

    What higher rates actually buy: more relaxed filter design at the converter, lower latency at a given buffer, and headroom for extreme pitch/stretch work in sound design, where slowing a file reveals content above the audible band. Real benefits. Niche benefits.

    What they don’t buy: “more detail” in the band you can hear. The audible range is fully described at standard rates — that’s the theorem, not an opinion. Meanwhile 192 kHz quadruples file sizes, quarters your plugin count, and some gear performs measurably worse handling ultrasonics it was never asked to reproduce.

    The honest position: track at 48 kHz, spend the saved CPU on better takes, and let sound designers use the high rates they genuinely need. Nobody ever streamed your song and said “shame about the sample rate.”

    If a number on a spec sheet were audible, we’d all hear the difference between our interfaces. We hear the difference between our rooms.

    The 3:1 Rule: Mic Placement Math That Actually Matters

    Most mic-placement advice is vibes. This one is arithmetic, it’s older than everyone reading this, and it still prevents more mud than any plugin: the 3:1 rule.

    The rule: when two mics capture the same source area, the second mic should be at least three times the distance of the first mic’s distance to its source. Vocalist’s mic six inches away? The next open mic wants to be eighteen inches or more from that vocalist. That spacing drops the bleed low enough that phase cancellation stops eating your tone.

    Why you care: comb filtering — that hollow, phasey, “why does this sound like a cheap speakerphone” effect — comes from the same sound arriving at two mics slightly out of time. You can’t EQ it away, because it’s not a frequency problem. It’s a timing problem wearing a frequency costume.

    Where it shows up: choir mics, drum overheads, two acoustic guitarists sharing a stage, panel discussions with a forest of podium mics. Walk the stage, do the math, move the stands. Free fix. Feels like a new PA.

    You can’t mix your way out of a placement problem. Move the mic; the plugin was never going to save you.

    Stop Maxing the Master Bus — Headroom Is a Feature

    Somewhere along the way “louder” started meaning “better,” and master faders everywhere have been pinned against the ceiling since. Here’s the thing the meter is trying to tell you: that last stretch isn’t volume. It’s damage.

    What headroom actually is: the space between your average level and the point where the system starts lying. Digital clipping isn’t warm. PA limiters saving you all night isn’t dynamics. A master bus living at -6 dB means transients — the crack of a snare, the front of a vocal consonant — still arrive shaped like themselves.

    The live version: if the only way the mix feels big is the master at zero, the mix isn’t big — it’s crowded. Balance, high-passing, and taming the two channels fighting for the midrange will buy more perceived loudness than the last 3 dB of fader ever will.

    The studio version: mix into headroom and let mastering do its one job. Slamming a limiter on the 2-bus to impress a client on Tuesday makes a mastering engineer un-slam it on Thursday, minus the transients you already spent.

    Loud is a decision you make once, at the end. Headroom is a decision you keep making the whole way there.

    Feedback during the set feels random. It isn’t. Every room and every wedge has the same handful of frequencies waiting to take off, and they’re findable on a Tuesday when nobody’s watching.

    The routine: one open mic at the vocal position, monitor up slowly until the first ring appears. Find that frequency on the EQ, pull it a few dB — not a crater, a trim. Bring the level up again. Second ring, same treatment. Two or three passes and you’ve bought yourself real gain before feedback, calmly, with coffee in hand.

    Why alone matters: ringing out with a band on stage means hunting a squeal while eight people wince at you. Doing it empty means the dangerous frequencies are already handled before a musician ever asks for “more me.” The request that used to be a risk becomes a fader move.

    The restraint clause: every cut costs tone. If you’ve notched more than three or four spots, the problem isn’t EQ anymore — it’s mic choice, wedge placement, or a singer cupping the capsule. Fix the physics before you keep carving the sound.

    Feedback isn’t bad luck. It’s a to-do list you haven’t done yet.

    There used to be a pedalboard. It had a power supply that cost more than some pedals, a patch-cable situation I defended in arguments, and a failure point roughly every four inches. The Helix Stadium XL replaced the entire conversation.

    Credentials first, because modelers are a religion: I’ve owned the resume. Previous Helix units — okay. Genuinely fine. The Quad Cortex — honestly phenomenal, and I’ll say that in a Line 6 post because it’s true. The HeadRush — 11/10. Trash. I said what I said. The Stadium XL is the first one that’s felt incredible instead of acceptable — the first modeler I stopped auditioning and just played.

    What it is, for the unfamiliar: Line 6’s flagship floor modeler — amps, cabs, effects, routing, all of it in one unit you can carry in one hand while holding coffee in the other. The Stadium XL is the big one: more DSP than you’ll honestly use, a screen you can read from standing height, and enough footswitches that nothing important needs a submenu on stage.

    The live case is the whole case: every guitar sound the set needs travels in one unit that soundcheck-patches into the LV1 rig in about ninety seconds — a direct line to front of house, consistent night to night, no amp mic placement roulette. Volunteers can’t unplug the wrong pedal, because there are no wrong pedals to unplug.

    The honest trade: a modeler makes you commit your tone decisions at home instead of tweaking knobs on stage, and that’s a feature disguised as a limitation. Dial the patches in a quiet room, then play the show. The people who hate modelers are often just people who miss fiddling — which is fair, but it’s a hobby, not a tone strategy.

    One roadie note: it lives in a Gator ATA case with wheels and a pull handle. Carrying your whole guitar rig in one hand is a great flex right up until the parking lot is far. Get the wheels.

    Would a tube amp in a great room still beat it for a record? On the right song, with time to burn — maybe, and we’ve got mics for exactly that day. But the Stadium XL shows up every week sounding like the decision you made on purpose. Consistency wins more Sundays than magic does.

    The best amp is the one that sounds the same at rehearsal, soundcheck, and the show. It took a computer in a floor unit to finally get one.

    sE V7 vs the SM57: What the Charts Actually Say

    Every mic locker in America has a drawer full of 57s and 58s, and we were all taught the same rule: when in doubt, grab the Shure. Fifty years of being dropped, thrown, and used as a hammer earned that rule. So instead of telling you a story about which mic “won,” let’s do something more useful. Look at the curves.

    Reading the orange line (SM57): 40 Hz to 15 kHz, with that famous presence peak — roughly +7 dB centered near 6 kHz — then it falls off a cliff. That peak is the whole personality. It’s why a 57 cuts through a dense mix on snare and guitar amps, and it’s also why a 57 vocal can read as “forward” instead of “open.” There’s not much mic above 15k. There doesn’t need to be for a snare.

    Reading the teal line (V7): 40 Hz to 19 kHz, and instead of one big peak, two gentle lifts — one around 3.5 kHz for intelligibility, one around 10 kHz for air. That second lift is the part you hear as “expensive.” Add the supercardioid pattern — tighter than the Shure’s cardioid — and on paper you get more gain before feedback and less of the drummer living in the vocal channel. That’s not a hot take. That’s what tighter patterns do.

    So which one: for a lead vocal on a loud stage, the V7’s chart is simply shaped more like the job — air on top, controlled pattern, no 6k spike to tame. For snare and amps, the 57’s midrange wall is the job, which is why it stays undefeated there. And the 57 is still cheaper, more common, and more forgiving of singers with wandering technique — a supercardioid punishes people who drift off-axis.

    Don’t take my word for it — that’s the point. The charts are public. Match the curve to the job and half the mic debate disappears.

    How to Build a Stage Rider Sound Engineers Actually Read

    Most stage riders die the same death: somebody opens the PDF, squints at four pages of clutter, closes it, and wings your soundcheck anyway. I’ve been on both sides of that PDF. I’ve sent riders that got ignored, and I’ve been the engineer skimming one twenty minutes before doors. So here’s the format that actually survives contact with a busy production day — one page, four sections, zero fluff.

    Why most riders get ignored

    A rider isn’t a manifesto. It’s a work order. The engineer reading it has fifteen other things open and roughly ninety seconds of attention for you. Every extra page, every paragraph of backstory, every “we prefer a warm mix” — that’s time they don’t have and information they can’t patch. The riders that get used share one trait: an engineer can act on them without reading a single full sentence.

    The one-page rule

    Everything on one page. If it doesn’t fit, you’re including things the venue doesn’t need. What belongs: The band name, contact number, and set length at the top. Then three blocks: input list, stage plot, monitor mixes. That’s the whole document. Tech specs about your in-ears’ brand? Cut it. The story about your pedalboard? Cut it. One page.

    The input list

    Channel number, source, mic or DI, and who it belongs to. In that order, in a table, numbered the way you’d want them patched. Kick before snare, drums before bass, bass before guitars, vocals last. If you use the same order every show, the engineer can patch from memory by channel eight. Two details that make engineers trust you instantly: mark phantom power where you need it, and mark stereo pairs clearly. Nothing says amateur like a mystery DI that turns out to be a stereo keyboard on one channel.

    The stage plot

    A simple bird’s-eye drawing: who stands where, amps and monitors as boxes, power drops marked with an X. It doesn’t need to be pretty — it needs to be true. The stage plot answers the question every stagehand has during changeover: “where does this go?” Update it when your lineup changes. An out-of-date plot is worse than none, because the crew will set the stage confidently and wrong.

    Monitor mixes

    One line per mix: “Mix 1 — lead vocal: vocal loud, acoustic light, no drums.” Write what each person actually wants to hear, not just who the mix belongs to. Engineers can build a usable monitor mix in one pass from a sentence like that — and your first five minutes of soundcheck stop being charades.

    Send it right, keep it current

    Send the rider when the show is confirmed — not the night before. Attach it as a PDF with your band name in the filename, because “rider_final_v3(2).pdf” disappears into downloads folders forever. And when something changes — new drummer, added synth, dropped backing tracks — update the rider before the next send. The goal is that the document is never wrong.

    Unpopular Opinion: Click Tracks Are Overrated for Small Acoustic Sets

    Click tracks became the default for basically every kind of live set, and for a full band running tracks, in-ears, and lighting cues locked to a timeline, that makes complete sense — you genuinely need the sync. But somewhere along the way it became the assumed default for every configuration, including a three-piece acoustic set with no tracks, no cues, nothing that actually requires a locked tempo. And that’s where I think it’s actively overrated.

    Field Notes — Fighting Words

    Here’s the actual cost of a click on a set that doesn’t need one: you take three or four musicians who could be listening to each other, breathing together, actually feeling where a phrase wants to land, and you replace that shared listening with everyone individually locking to a grid in their ear instead. You gain nothing — there’s no track to sync, no lighting cue depending on tempo — and you lose the thing that makes a small acoustic set actually feel human: the tiny, real tempo push and pull that happens when musicians are genuinely responding to each other in the room.

    I’ve watched genuinely skilled players get worse the moment a click goes in their ear for a set that never needed one. Not because they can’t play to a click — they can, obviously — but because a click gives permission to stop actually listening to the room. You start following a grid instead of following the music, and a small acoustic set is exactly the format where following the music is the entire point.

    To be clear about where I land: full band, tracks, in-ears synced to a lighting rig, absolutely run the click, that’s not up for debate. But a guitar, a cajon, and a vocal doing a set with zero tracks and zero cues? Let them breathe. Let the tempo move the two or three BPM it wants to move on the bridge because that’s what real musicians playing together actually do.

    The click isn’t a universal good. It’s a tool for a specific problem — sync across elements that can’t otherwise stay aligned. If that problem doesn’t exist in your set, you’re not adding safety. You’re removing the one thing that would have made that particular set actually feel alive.
