    What a Blown Monitor Mix Taught Me About Ego

    Years back I ran monitors for a set where a vocalist kept coming back to me between songs asking for more of themselves in the wedge. I gave it to them. Still not enough, they said. I gave more. By the third ask I was pushing a level that was genuinely uncomfortable for anyone standing near that wedge, and it still wasn’t landing as “enough” for them.

    Field Notes — The Hard Way

    I was so focused on being right about the mix — I’d built it carefully, I knew what was in it, I was confident it was technically correct — that I never stopped to ask the actual question. I was solving “give them more of the fader” instead of solving “why do they feel like they can’t hear themselves.”

    Turned out the actual issue had nothing to do with the monitor mix at all. Their in-ear seal had shifted mid-set from moving around on stage, and what they were hearing was a physically worse seal letting more stage volume bleed in around the monitor, not a genuinely insufficient send from me. No amount of fader pushed would have fixed that, because the problem was never in my hands to begin with. I found out after the set, from a two-minute conversation I should have had after the first ask instead of the fourth.

    Here’s what that night actually taught me, and it wasn’t about monitor technique: the fastest way to make a real problem worse is to be so sure of your own competence that you stop actually listening to the person telling you something’s wrong. I trusted my mix over their experience of it, and that’s backwards every single time. They’re the one standing in the sound. I’m the one guessing at it from a board twenty feet away.

    Now, second ask for the same thing, same show, I stop the fader-pushing and go ask a real question in person. Not “is that better” — “what does it actually feel like right now.” Half the time the answer has nothing to do with a level at all, and I would have kept turning a knob forever trying to fix a problem that was never mine to fix with a knob.

    Confidence in your mix is good. Confidence that overrides someone telling you it’s not working for them is just ego with a fader attached. Learned that one the hard way, and I don’t plan on relearning it.

    No, the $2,000 Cable Doesn’t Make Your Guitar Sound Better

    Let’s just get into it. A well-made, correctly shielded instrument cable and a $2,000 “audiophile” cable, run at the lengths and distances actually used on a stage or in a studio, are not audibly different in any way that survives an honest, level-matched, blind comparison. This has been tested. Repeatedly. By people with far more rigorous methodology than “I plugged it in and it felt warmer.”

    Here’s the actual physics, in plain terms: at the frequency range and cable lengths relevant to a guitar or bass signal, the differences between a well-made $30 cable and an exotic $2,000 one are so far below the threshold of audible perception that they don’t matter in any practical sense. Capacitance, resistance, all of it — real numbers, measurable, and at instrument-cable lengths, functionally irrelevant to what reaches your amp.

    So why does the expensive cable “sound better” to the person who bought it? Because they know which one they’re playing. Expectation bias is one of the most well-documented effects in all of audio perception, and it is not a character flaw — it happens to trained engineers, not just weekend guitarists. The second you know you’re using the “premium” option, your brain starts finding evidence to justify the purchase. That’s not a knock on anyone’s ears. It’s just how perception works when belief gets involved before the signal does.

    Where should the money actually go instead? A cable with genuinely good build quality — solid connectors, proper shielding, strain relief that won’t fail after six months of load-in and load-out — is worth paying for, because that buys you reliability, not tone. Buy a cable that won’t crackle out during a solo because a bad shield finally gave up. That’s a real, measurable benefit. Buying a cable because a marketing page used the word “purity” is paying for a story, not a signal improvement.

    I’m not saying gear doesn’t matter. Gear absolutely matters. I’m saying this specific category of purchase is one of the most well-documented examples of paying real money for a story instead of a signal. Spend on the mic. Spend on the preamp. Spend on the cable that won’t die on you mid-set. Skip the one that’s selling you a feeling.

    Parallel Compression for Vocals: When It Works, When It’s a Crutch

    Parallel compression gets talked about like it’s a secret weapon you slap on every vocal and everything suddenly sounds like a record. It’s not that. It’s a tool for a specific job, and if you don’t have that job, it’s just adding mud with extra steps.

    Field Notes — Try This At Home

    The actual problem parallel compression solves: you’ve got a vocal with big dynamic range — whispered verse, belted chorus — and you need the quiet parts to sit up front and audible while the loud parts don’t blow past everything else in the mix. Straight compression on the main vocal chain can do this too, but push it hard enough to really tame that range and you start losing the transient snap, the breath, the texture that makes a voice sound like a person instead of a processed signal.

    Parallel compression sidesteps that trade-off. You duplicate the vocal to a second bus, squash that duplicate hard — we’re talking heavy ratio, fast attack, aggressive gain reduction, way more than you’d ever put on the main channel — and blend it back under the untouched original. The dry signal keeps its natural dynamics and character. The squashed duplicate underneath it fills in the quiet moments and adds density without you ever compressing the actual source into submission.

    Here’s when it’s a crutch instead of a tool: if your singer’s actual dynamic control is inconsistent — swallowing words in verses, screaming choruses without any sense of the mix around them — parallel compression will not fix that. It’ll just make an inconsistent performance a little louder and a little denser while still being inconsistent. You’re polishing the symptom. The actual fix there is a conversation about performance and mic technique, not a mix bus.

    Parallel compression is for a genuinely dynamic, controlled performance that needs its softest details to translate through a PA system without those details getting eaten by everything else happening in the mix. If the performance is already inconsistent on its own, no compression trick, parallel or otherwise, is going to be a substitute for that conversation.

    Use it when the problem is dynamics you want to preserve. Skip it, or address the real issue, when the problem is actually inconsistency you’re trying to smooth over with a plugin instead of a rehearsal.

    Vintage Gear Worship Is Mostly Nostalgia Marketing

    Every gear forum has the same thread eventually: “nothing sounds like the old stuff anymore.” Vintage preamps, vintage compressors, vintage consoles, all supposedly carrying some tonal magic that modern manufacturing simply can’t replicate. I get why the story is appealing. I don’t think it’s mostly true.

    Field Notes — Fighting Words

    Here’s the actual, unglamorous reason a lot of vintage gear sounds distinct: decades of component drift, tolerance variance, and outright degradation, not a manufacturing secret that got lost to time. Old capacitors drift in value. Transformers age in ways that shift their frequency response. Tubes degrade and change their harmonic behavior as they wear. Some of that drift genuinely sounds pleasant — nobody’s arguing it sounds bad. But “pleasant because it degraded in a specific, somewhat random way” and “objectively superior because of how it was built” are two very different claims, and the marketing around vintage gear consistently sells you the second one when the honest answer is closer to the first.

    Modern manufacturing tolerances are, in almost every measurable way, tighter and more consistent than what was coming off assembly lines decades ago. Modern transformers, modern converters, modern component matching — genuinely better by the numbers, across the board. A well-built modern preamp modeled after a classic circuit will often measure closer to that circuit’s original, as-designed spec than an actual 50-year-old unit will, because the original unit has drifted a long way from its own spec sheet by now.

    None of this means vintage gear sounds bad. Some of it sounds genuinely great, and if you love a piece and it’s in your budget, use it, no argument there. What I’m actually pushing back on is the idea that the sound is coming from some lost manufacturing secret rather than from decades of components aging in a particular direction — and that a modern piece is somehow starting from a lesser place just because it was built this year instead of in 1974.

    Buy vintage because you love a specific piece and what it does. Don’t buy it because you’ve been told modern gear is incapable of sounding as good. That story sells a lot of overpriced gear to people chasing a magic that’s mostly just component drift with a great origin story attached.

    The Drum Rig: DW Shells, a Black Beauty, and One Heavy K

    Drums are where the studio stops being theoretical. You can fake a lot of things in a mix; you cannot fake a good drum sound in a good room. So here’s the kit that actually gets recorded here, and why each piece survived.

    The shells are DW — because they tune fast and stay tuned, which matters more in a working studio than any brochure adjective. A kit that holds its tuning through a three-hour tracking session is worth more than a kit that sounds 5% more magical for the first twenty minutes.

    The snare is a Black Beauty, which is the least surprising sentence in recording. There’s a reason it’s on more records than almost any drum ever made: crack that cuts without being brittle, and it takes EQ like it’s being paid to. When a student asks “why does my snare sound like a phone book,” the answer is usually half tuning, half “you are not miking a Black Beauty.”

    Cymbals are Masterworks, plus one heavy K ride — the handmade Turkish stuff for character, and the K because a heavy ride with a defined bell solves the “wash ate my mix” problem at the source. Cymbals are where drummers buy sizzle and engineers buy headaches; picking them for how they record, not how they demo in a shop, is the whole trick.

    The small stuff that isn’t small: Ahead sticks, because drummers who play hard eat wood sticks like snacks and consistency of weight matters for consistency of sound. None of this is exotic. All of it is deliberate. That’s kind of the Field Notes thesis at this point.

    A great drum sound is a hundred boring decisions made on purpose. The kit list is just the receipt.

    I Ran a Budget Wireless IEM System for a Month — Here’s the Real Verdict

    I put the NUX B-7PSM — the standard personal-monitor model, not the Pro — on the team for a full month of rehearsals and two live services before writing a word about it, because a first-impression gear review is basically a press release with extra steps.

    The category is packed right now — every gear brand has a “budget” wireless option chasing the same crowd that got priced out of the professional systems years ago. This one landed in that price range where you’re clearly buying “good enough,” not “best in class,” and I wanted to know exactly what “good enough” actually gets you.

    What held up: RF stability was the real surprise. I expected dropouts in a room with this much wireless traffic already competing for spectrum, and across a month of use I had exactly one glitch, during a tech rehearsal, that I couldn’t even reproduce on a retest. For the price, that’s a legitimately good result. Battery life matched the spec sheet, which sounds like a low bar until you remember how often it isn’t true.

    What didn’t: The onboard limiter is aggressive in a way that isn’t adjustable enough. Push a hot mix and it doesn’t compress so much as flatten, and you can hear it happen in real time — dynamics just disappear. That’s a real limitation if your mixer likes to run in-ears hot, which, let’s be honest, most of us do at some point in a set.

    My real complaint is fidelity, not RF: sound does degrade a bit going wireless on the B-7PSM versus a wired connection, or versus a higher-end system. On stock earpieces it’s subtle enough that most people won’t clock it. I run custom 6-driver IEMs, though, and on those it’s easy to hear — the B-7PSM takes a little resolution off the top compared to running the same in-ears wired. The more resolving your ears are, the more of that gap you’ll notice.

    The frequency response is also noticeably scooped — present low end, present highs, a dip in the low-mids that makes vocals sound thinner than they do on a reference system. Fine for a click and a rough mix reference. Less fine if someone’s trying to actually judge their vocal tone through it.

    The actual verdict: for a rehearsal system, a backup system, or a smaller room where you’re not pushing extreme SPL into the ears, this earns its spot. For a front-line, every-week, this-is-what-the-artist-trusts-their-pitch-to system — especially if you’re running higher-end custom in-ears that will show you everything you’re giving up — I’d still spend the extra money on something with a cleaner limiter and flatter response. It’s not a bad product. It’s a product doing exactly what its price point promises, which is rarer than it should be.

    Buy it knowing what it’s for, and it’ll earn its keep. Buy it expecting it to replace a $2,000 system, and you’ll be writing your own disappointed review in a month.

    The Click Track Mistake That Will Wreck Your In-Ears

    Everybody blames the click when the in-ears feel off. “The click’s too loud.” “The click’s throwing me.” “I can’t feel the pocket with the click in my ear.” Nine times out of ten, that’s not actually what’s wrong.

    What’s actually wrong is that the click is the only consistent, predictable thing in that in-ear mix, and it’s exposing every other inconsistency in the signal chain around it.

    Field Notes — Don't Be That Guy

    Here’s the mistake I see constantly: someone builds a click track pack with a straight metronome click, sends it to In-Ear Bus 1, and calls it done. No accents on the downbeat. No differentiation between the “1” and the other three counts. Just a flat, identical tick, four times a bar, forever.

    A flat click is actually harder to lock to than one with a clear downbeat, because your brain has to keep actively counting instead of feeling the bar. You’re doing math in your ear instead of feeling music. That’s exhausting over a 45-minute set, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that makes a drummer swear the click is “dragging” or “rushing” when it’s actually locked dead on — they’re just fatigued from counting instead of feeling.

    The fix is stupidly simple and takes ten minutes to set up: build your click pack with an accented downbeat. Different pitch or different sound entirely on beat 1. Suddenly the click isn’t a flat pulse anymore, it’s a bar. Your drummer’s brain can lock onto the shape instead of grinding through the count.

    Field Notes — Don't Be That Guy

    Second mistake, right next to the first: sending the exact same click level to every single in-ear mix. The drummer needs the click loud and clear, no argument. The keys player might need it much quieter, buried under a pad, just enough to stay oriented without it fighting their own sense of time. Give everyone the drummer’s click level and you’ll have half the stage fighting a click that’s too dominant for what they’re actually doing with it.

    Build the downbeat accent. Vary the send level per person based on what they actually need it for. Do those two things and 80% of “click track problems” turn out to have never been click problems at all — they were mix decisions nobody made on purpose.

    How the Mic Locker Actually Gets Used

    Every studio posts a mic list. Almost nobody tells you which mic actually comes out of the drawer when the clock is running. So here’s ours — Warm Audio, Shure, sE, United Studio Technologies, Neumann — sorted by what they’re actually FOR.

    The Neumann TLM 102 is the “stop auditioning” mic. The published curve explains why better than I can: 20 Hz to 20 kHz, ruler-flat through the mids, one polite lift above 6 kHz for presence. No hype bumps to fight, no character to work around. Vocals and acoustic instruments come back sounding like themselves, but slightly better dressed.

    The SM57 is the law of the land. Snare top, guitar amps, and roughly four hundred other jobs since forever. For lead vocals we lean V7 instead — the response charts tell that story — but on instruments the 57 remains undefeated because it refuses to be impressed by anything, including being dropped.

    The Studio Brain: Studio One, Melodyne, and a Pile of Waves

    People ask what we mix on like the answer is going to be a secret weapon. It’s not. It’s Studio One, Melodyne, a pile of Waves plugins, and Arturia’s Analog Lab for sounds — a stack picked for one reason: students can stop thinking about the software and start thinking about the music faster.

    Studio One is the hub because it stays out of the way. Drag-and-drop everything, no ceremony between “I have an idea” and “the idea is recorded.” When you teach recording, every extra click is a place a beginner falls off. Fewer places to fall off means more finished songs, and finished songs are the entire point.
